Instructions to find a serial number (S/N) on the Seagate, Samsung Maxtor and LaCie drives. Your product serial number is a unique identifier that allows us to look up information about your product and its warranty. Now the drive firmware has a new st number and new serial number. I tried to flash the correct firmware but the seagate update does not recognize the hard drive. The correct Hard drive classification is st32000 542as and a serial number of 5xw04yzh. Seagate is the process of reducing warranty lengths on their lines of desktop drives. The warranty length will depend upon the date of manufacture, which can be determined by the serial number. Seagate Hard Drive Serial Number Lookup
Seagate hard drives display a code instead of the manufacturing date. The code is described here and an online decoder is available here.
In short, it's a 4 or 5 digit number of the form YYWWD
or YYWD
, where:
YY
is the year, 00 is year 1999W
orWW
is the week number beginning 1D
is day of week beginning 1- Week 1 begins on the first saturday of July in the stated year
Examples
- 06212 means Sunday 20 November 2005
- 0051 means Saturday 31 July 1999
How can this be decoded in a bash
script ?

This is what I did, it should work:
It worked for the two dates given above...If you want to customize the date output, add a format string at the end of the FINALDATe assignment.
Here is a short script, it takes two arguments: $1
is the code to convert and $2
is an optional format (see man date
), otherwise defaulted (see code).
It uses the last Saturday in June instead of the first one in July because I found it easer to locate and it allowed me to just add the relevant number of weeks and days to it.
Examples:
starfrystarfryI created a Seagate Date Code Calculator that actually works with pretty good accuracy. I've posted it here on this forum for anyone to use: https://www.data-medics.com/forum/seagate-date-code-conversion-translation-tool-t1035.html#p3261

It's far more accurate than the other ones online which often point to the entirely wrong year. I know it's not a bash script, but will still get the job done for anyone else who's searching how to do this.
Enjoy!

I went to the official Seagate website, but not one word about warranty length. I find that very disturbing. Anyone know the warranty length?

I bought some that were 'Sold by Oceanside Store and Fulfilled by Amazon' and the Seagate web site said they were OEM drives that did not have an end-user warranty. Each drive was in a white box branded with OceanSide Marketplace. I also bought some that were 'Sold by: Amazon.com LLC' and these arrived in the normal brown boxes with the black inserts; and Seagate's site clearly displays a warranty ending 2 years (and 1 month) from now.Dear Sean Brady:

Dear Sean Brady:
Thank you for contacting Seagate Support.
I will be happy to assist you with your inquiry. Selling OEM drives is a legitimate practice. OEM companies, such as HP, DELL, Apple, etc., sometimes order excess quantity of drives. They can and do sell their excess drives to third-party retailers, who can then sell them to consumers. I would be nice that said company's would put an advisory that drives that come from OEMs would not have a Seagate warranty. If you are within the return window for the drive, I would see about returning the unit and then purchasing a unit directly from an Authorized Retailer.

The warranty period for all components other than the main product is ninety (90) days from the documented date of your purchase or two (2) years if purchased in a European Economic Area Member State.'
So, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you just buy seagate peripherals, like drives and stuff, in America, you only get 90 days? But if you purchased it in Europe, you get 2 years? see less

I've had it for a little over 1 year, and it says 'out of warranty' so I'd assume 1 year.
